Pursue God (Proverbs 21:21)
This is a radical proposition that the LORD is making through His servant Solomon in this Proverb. Today, I think we take it for granted this emphasis on self-sacrifice and humility. It is baked into the cake of Western philosophy and lives in the cultural atmosphere.
This was not the case in ancient times. Strength… power… authority… dominance… these things were the factors cultures looked to for leadership, guidance, direction… and honestly to “find goodness.” If someone was powerful and strong, they could be trusted for support or assistance. The LORD tells His people countless times to not trust in worldly powers for “horses or chariots.”
So - looking at this proverb then… we are told that the one who pursues righteousness and “faithful love” … or “mercy” (hesed) in the Hebrew! … this person ACTUALLY finds life, righteousness, and honor. SO - how does one do that?
Long story, short… pursue God. God is the Righteous One. He IS love. He is mercy and justice, too! If we pursue the LORD… not our own selfish desires (of many - MANY - varieties…) - pursue God. Doing that puts us directly in the path of receiving righteousness (from the Father)… life (because of the Son)… and honor (through the Spirit).
How do we do that? BREATHE: breathe in the Bible (daily, intentional reading) … breathe out the Bible (constant, intentional prayer). Easy to remember - harder to practice! But, GO! Pursue God!
